How does the breast ultrasound work?

Preparation for the test Breast ultrasound

Preparation for the breast ultrasound examination is minimal. It is advisable to perform the examination in the first half of the menstrual cycle, as the breast tissues are less sensitive then. It is not necessary to be fasting or off medication. Breast ultrasound is a safe examination.

Course of breast ultrasound examination

The patient lies on her back, with her hands raised behind her head to expose her armpits and breasts. The specialist applies a gel to help move the ultrasound transducer over the skin. The specialist then applies the ultrasound transducer to the breast and scans the tissues, assessing the structure of the mammary gland. The image from the transducer is displayed on a monitor, allowing for an accurate analysis.

Duration of breast ultrasound examinationi

The examination takes approximately 15-30 minutes. A longer examination time may be dictated by the need for a more thorough evaluation of the lesions found. Time to discuss the result of the examination with the specialist is also important.

How often to have a breast ultrasound?

The frequency of breast ultrasound depends on the patient's age and risk factors. Women over the age of 30 are advised to have a breast ultrasound once a year, especially if there are risk factors for breast cancer. In younger women who do not have a genetic burden, breast ultrasound can be done less frequently, but regular visits to a specialist and palpation of the breast are important.

Breast ultrasound versus mammography

Breast ultrasound and mammography are two different imaging examinations. Mammography is an X-ray examination of the breast, breast ultrasound is an ultrasound examination. The examinations are complementary to each other, they complement each other.
