It occurs when The mature egg cell (oocyte) is released from the ovary, or more precisely from the Graff's follicle. The released oocyte then moves into the fallopian tube. This makes the ovum ready for fertilisation by sperm.

If it is fertilised, the embryo will travel further into the uterus and implant, from which a pregnancy will develop. If the fusion with the sperm does not occur, the ovum together with the lining of the uterus are removed during the next menstruation.

It is worth remembering that ovulation and fertile days are not exactly the same thing. A mature ovum can survive for about 24 hours, whereas sperm can survive in the genital tract for up to 5 days. Fertilisation can therefore occur through intercourse even before ovulation occurs. The fertility window therefore lasts approximately 6 days. It is during this period that the chances of getting pregnant are greatest.

Ovulation and the release of hormones during the menstrual cycle are controlled by a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. It sends signals instructing the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland to secrete:

luteinising hormone (LH)

and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

Ovarian hormones also play an important role:

estrogen

and progesterone.

Oestrogen levels gradually increase during the first phase of the cycle. This makes the cervical mucus more plentiful and thinner, and the endometrium prepares for the implantation of the embryo. In turn, progesterone prepares the body for pregnancy.

Ovulation and the menstrual cycle

The length of the menstrual cycle depends on when ovulation occurs . In healthy women of childbearing age, the cycle usually lasts between 28 and 32 days. The average length is considered to be 28 days. The first day of bleeding is the first day of the cycle.

OWULATION

Ovulation takes place 13-15 days before the onset of menstruation. In longer cycles, ovulation may fall on the 18th or even 40th day.

Even if a woman's cycle is generally regular, changes in its length can occur under the influence of various factors. This means that the precise determination of fertile days is not so obvious.

Ovulation symptoms. How do you recognise ovulation?

Observing one's own body is one method that helps to determine a woman's fertile days and ovulation. Approaching ovulation can cause an increase in vaginal mucus. This discharge is often clear and stringy - it may even resemble raw egg white.

Other characteristic signs of ovulation include:

breast tenderness,

increased sexual desire,

Ovarian pain - characterised by discomfort or pain on one side of the abdomen,

softer and slightly dilated cervix .

As the symptoms of fertile days are not characteristic, one cannot rely on them alone. In many cases, measuring the temperature and checking hormone levels prove to be more precise methods. To confirm ovulation, ovulation tests can be performed or you can visit a gynaecologist who will perform an ultrasound.

Every woman experiences these days differently. The most characteristic symptoms are sometimes joined by others, such as headache, lower back pain or dizziness. Most women, however, go through ovulation painlessly.

Ovulation symptoms and body temperature

Shortly after ovulation, there is usually a slight rise in body temperature. This is due to the release of progesterone, which starts to be secreted when the egg is released. There is then an increase in body temperature of approximately 0.2-0.6 degrees Celsius. Women are usually most fertile for 3 to 4 days, before the temperature rises.

Ovulation itself lasts only 24 hours. On the other hand, immediately before ovulation (about 12 hours), the body temperature may drop gently - to a level of 36.4. In the first half of the cycle, i.e. from menstruation to the beginning of ovulation, the temperature is stable and is usually around 36.6 degrees.

Hormones - mainly progesterone and oestrogen - are responsible for all these changes. It is the former hormone that is responsible for the increase in body temperature after ovulation.

These fluctuations in body temperature make it possible to determine more or less which stage of the cycle a woman is in at any given time. It is worth remembering, however, that it is not only ovulation or the absence of ovulation that can affect changes in this area. The thermal method is not useful, for example, during an infection with a fever. If you nevertheless want to try the thermal method of ovulation tracking, there are a few rules to bear in mind.

In order to measure the temperature as reliably as possible, it is necessary to:

measure the temperature in the morning after waking up,

ensure that sleep on measurement days is restful and uninterrupted,

always measure with the same thermometer and at the same points on the body (preferably in the mouth, as the forehead temperature often fluctuates and does not always reflect the internal temperature well - especially when such small changes in its value are important),

use an accurate thermometer (an electronic thermometer that shows the temperature to two decimal places or an ovulation thermometer - available from pharmacies - is best),

record the measured temperature manually or in the app.

How long does ovulation last in an average cycle?

Ovulation lasts for a maximum of 48 hours, but mostly it is about 24 hours. This is the time when the egg cell is released from the Graff's follicle, which is a mature ovarian follicle. When the ovum is mature and ready for fertilisation, such a follicle ruptures and fluid containing just one ovum is released from it.

However, if the ovum, once released from the ovary, is not fertilised, its activity and ability to fertilise will expire within 12-24 hours. If fertilisation does not occur, both this ovum and the uterine lining will be expelled from the body. This process takes up to 2 weeks and ends with menstrual bleeding.

It is also important to note that - although ovulation occurs once a month - you can get pregnant not only on that one day. Fertilisation can also occur after intercourse a few days before ovulation (usually 5-6 days). This is due to the lifespan of the sperm in the genital tract - it is just a few days. Therefore, if intercourse takes place a few days before ovulation, the sperm can unite with the ovum released at that time and fertilisation will occur. The fertilised ovum then makes its way from the fallopian tube to the uterus and it is there that a pregnancy develops.

How do you calculate ovulation? Ways of determining

Several factors can affect the length of the cycle, and thus the day on which ovulation occurs. Those that are capable of disturbing cycle length include:

stress,

diseases,

diet

training.

To calculate ovulation more accurately, you can use a fertile day calculator. It is also worth installing a cycle calendar on your smartphone. This way you will not have to manually note down the course of your period. In addition, the programme will help you interpret the data, i.e. the temperature measurement. The choice of apps is large, so you can easily find the best one for you.

Among the most commonly recommended applications are:

OvuFriend,

Flo,

Clue,

Monthly Calendar,

Glow,

OvuView.

You can also use fertility days calculator InviMed, with which you can easily determine the ideal days to get pregnant.

The moment of ovulation marks the peak of fertility in a woman's entire monthly cycle. It is the best time for couples trying to conceive. Observing the cycle makes it possible to pinpoint the fertile days and, therefore, to try to conceive more successfully.

Mucus monitoring

One of the most common ways to determine fertile days and ovulation is to measure body temperature. However, this one can fluctuate slightly depending on various factors, so it should definitely not be the only method.

One additional way to help determine your fertile days is to observe your cervical mucus. It changes on different days of the cycle, so careful observation and recognition of these changes can greatly help in determining fertile days and ovulation.

One of the most important indicators is the increase in the amount of mucus secreted (oestrogens are responsible for this) and the change in its consistency. Just before the onset of ovulation, it becomes clear, slippery, stretchy and watery - so that sperm have easier transport and better conditions for survival.

After ovulation, the mucus again changes its consistency and becomes thick, cloudy, weakly stretchy and sticky. This is a natural blockage for sperm, making it difficult, if not impossible, for sperm to enter the uterus.

How does the appearance and consistency of mucus change during the menstrual cycle? Although every woman is different and thus her body may send out different signals, the vast majority of mucus cycle is similar and looks as follows:

during menstruation - menstrual blood is not cervical mucus, but it is worth knowing that it is also produced during menstruation (however, due to mixing with blood, you are not able to notice it)

cloudy, thick and viscous,

creamier, more stretchy,

wet, clear and watery,

with the consistency of raw egg white, very stretchy, slippery,

cloudy, thick and viscous,

menstruation.

The fact that ovulation is imminent is indicated by mucus that is wet and watery and has the consistency of raw egg white. This is the best time to try for a baby.

In most cases, there is so much mucus that you will observe its consistency when wiping yourself, on the toilet paper. However, this is not always possible or accurate, so you can additionally monitor the mucus yourself by checking it.

How to do it?

Be sure to wash and dry your hands thoroughly before checking. Then assume a comfortable position where you have easy access to the vagina. Carefully (so as not to cause yourself pain) insert your index finger into your vagina, then remove it and observe the mucus on it. For better observations, join your index finger to your thumb and then separate them - this way you can see if the mucus is watery, stretchy, sticky or the consistency of raw egg white.

Luteinising hormone measurement kits

Once the ovum is mature, the body releases the luteinising hormone (LH), which triggers the release of the egg. Ovulation can occur within 24 to 36 hours after the LH surge. Ovulation prediction kits can detect a spike of the hormone in the urine just before ovulation. Ovulation tests can be purchased at any pharmacy. Home measurement is a simple and intuitive method that helps to identify ovulation. However, it is important to bear in mind that, despite using all possible methods, it is often difficult to determine the exact day of ovulation.

Irregular ovulation

Not every woman's menstrual cycle goes “by the book”. Various factors can contribute to disrupting it and thus to irregular ovulation.

This is most often the case for premenopausal women, when hormone secretion may already be fluctuating and causing cycle disruption. Naturally, however, this condition also affects younger women, especially teenage girls who are just reaching sexual maturity. The average menstrual cycle lasts 26-34 days. Irregular ovulation is referred to when the cycle does not fall within this window.

Sometimes there is no egg release during the cycle, in which case the phenomenon of non-ovulation is said to occur. Irregularity of the cycle can be influenced by the factors mentioned in the previous sections of this article (diet, stress, training), but it is important to remember that, although common, these are not the only possible causes of menstrual cycle disorders.

In some cases, irregular ovulation can be linked to medical conditions - most notably polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which significantly affects the body's hormonal balance and thus the course of the cycle, including naturally ovulation. .

If you observe symptoms such as:

menstrual cycles of more than 50 days,

excessive body hair,

increased blood pressure,

increase in body weight,

hair loss on the head,

worsening of the skin condition (especially acne on the face, décolleté, back),

see your doctor for further diagnostic steps.

Naturally, not only PCOS can disrupt the cycle. In the same way, chronic stress or hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism have quite an impact on the hormonal balance, upsetting it. This imbalance can cause quite a few problems, including menstruation and - by extension - fertility.

Why is ovulation monitoring important?

As already mentioned, the menstrual cycle and thus ovulation can be affected by at least several factors. If you are on a diet, have a lot of stress or train intensively, minor cycle disturbances are not particularly worrying.

However, they should not be the rule. If ovulation is irregular every month or the irregularity is repeated frequently (we speak of irregularity when the difference between cycles is at least 5 days), it is better not to ignore it.

Firstly, because it affects the woman's fertility and, if the couple is trying to have a child, things can be much more difficult. Secondly, there are many more factors that can disrupt your cycle. Even if you live under stress, do sport or follow a diet, it is better not to assume and take for granted that these are the sole causes of irregular ovulation. This is because there are several other factors - including health-related - that can disrupt your cycle.

These include:

endocrine disruption,

abnormal functioning of the thyroid gland,

ovarian failure,

polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS),

hyperprolactinaemia,

adrenal dysfunction.

So if irregular cycles are more the norm than a coincidence in your case, consult your doctor. Prolonged irregularities in the functioning of the body can have a negative impact on health. In the case of hormonal disorders (especially if the ratio of oestrogen and progesterone is disturbed), the condition of the heart, bones, metabolism and also mental health may suffer.

Ovulation and pregnancy - when to start trying for a baby?

If you are trying to have a baby, careful observation of your body will definitely make it easier to get pregnant. On this basis you will be able to calculate your fertile days and start trying for a baby at the right time. It is worth remembering, however, that you should not necessarily wait until the day of ovulation. Getting close a few days before ovulation increases the chance of conception. This is because sperm can survive in the female genital tract for up to several days. So if you wait until the very day of ovulation, the chances of conception may decrease significantly!

Frequently asked questions

1. can ovulation be postponed?

Even when a woman is menstruating regularly, ovulation can be delayed. This can be influenced by several factors, both environmental and health-related. A margin of error, even if small, is always possible.

2. is it possible to have more than one ovulation in one cycle?

As a rule, there is one ovulation in a woman's menstrual cycle. However, it can happen that it does not occur at all or that two or more Graff's follicles grow and rupture - in one or both ovaries.

3. is it possible to ovulate without having a period?

Ovulation is an integral part of the menstrual cycle. This is when the ovary releases an egg cell ready for fertilisation. However, ovulation-free menstrual cycles do occur, after which bleeding may either not occur or occur with a very significant delay. If pregnancy does not occur, every normal ovulatory cycle should end with bleeding

4. is the day of ovulation the only time you can get pregnant?

Fertilisation is possible even after intercourse a few days before the day of ovulation. This is because sperm can survive in the woman's genital tract for up to several days. Therefore, if intercourse occurs a few days before ovulation, the sperm may still be able to bind to the egg at that time.

5. why can't I get pregnant despite ovulating?

The human body is very complex and many factors, even seemingly trivial and insignificant ones, influence various processes in the body. It is no different with conception. Getting close at the time of ovulation is therefore not a guarantee of getting pregnant and many couples try for a child for a very long time. The average time to obtain a pregnancy with a regular ovulation cycle and regular intercourse and in the absence of other medical factors for the age group of women 20-30 years old is between 5 and 12 cycles

Substantive consultation:

Dr Robert Gizler - Specialist gynaecologist-obstetrician, Medical Director of the InviMed clinic in Wroclaw, Poland

Sources:

What Is Ovulation?
