{"id":5825,"date":"2024-04-28T18:04:20","date_gmt":"2024-04-28T18:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/invimed.pl\/?page_id=5825"},"modified":"2026-03-26T13:22:59","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T13:22:59","slug":"przyczyny-nieplodnosci-poronienie-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/przyczyny-nieplodnosci\/poronienia","title":{"rendered":"Miscarriages - symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"najwazniejsze-informacje\"><strong>Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/causes-of-infertility\/miscarriages\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/przyczyny-nieplodnosci\/poronienia\">Miscarriages<\/a> affect up to 50% of all pregnancies, of which 80% fall in the first trimester.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/causes-of-infertility\/miscarriages\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/przyczyny-nieplodnosci\/poronienia\">Risk of miscarriage <\/a>increases with age - in a 20-year-old it is 12-15%, in a 40-year-old it exceeds 50%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The main symptoms are severe lower abdominal cramps, bright red bleeding from the genital tract and cessation of pregnancy symptoms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over 60% <a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/causes-of-infertility\/miscarriages\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/przyczyny-nieplodnosci\/poronienia\">miscarriages<\/a> results from <a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/research\/genetic\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"269431\">genetic abnormalities<\/a> embryo, often related to the age of the parents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"jak-czesto-dochodzi-do-poronien\">How often do miscarriages occur?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As statistics show, miscarriages end even&nbsp;<strong>50% of all pregnancies<\/strong>More than half of these pregnancies are lost shortly after the embryo has implanted in the uterus, with genital bleeding occurring during the perimenopausal period and the woman often not realising that she has just had a miscarriage. Until&nbsp;<strong>80% miscarriages occur in the first trimester of pregnancy<\/strong>&nbsp;(first 12 weeks of pregnancy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"objawy-poronienia\">Symptoms of miscarriage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"check-list\">\n\t    <header class=\"check-list__header\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Signs of early miscarriage (up to the 12th week of pregnancy) are:<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/header>\n    <ul class=\"mb-0 p-0 check-list__inner\">\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n                <p>relatively strong, long-lasting cramps or pains in the lower abdomen that may radiate to the sacral region;<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n                <p>bleeding from the genital tract (the blood is bright red in colour and tissue and clots may be visible);<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n                <p>cessation of symptoms typical of pregnancy (nausea, breast tenderness),<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n                <p>absence of a fetal pulse on ultrasound (it is detectable from the fifth week of pregnancy).<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n        <\/ul>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 14th week of pregnancy, the placenta is fully formed - the termination of pregnancy from this point onwards is known as a late miscarriage . It manifests itself in a similar way to an early miscarriage, but the severity of the symptoms (genital bleeding, cramps) is much greater.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During <a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/blog\/miscarriages-symptoms-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\" type=\"blog\" id=\"1999\">miscarriages<\/a> late amniotic fluid drains away, and if infection of the amniotic egg is present, the woman may experience high fever and chills, muscle pains<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"poronienie-bezobjawowe\">Asymptomatic miscarriage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A miscarriage can also occur asymptomatically, as the fetus dies in the uterus. In this case, there is a so-called \"retained miscarriage\", which can only be detected by ultrasound examination. Sometimes, a poor prognosis for the development of the pregnancy is established during an ultrasound examination carried out at an early stage - worrying signs include delayed embryo development in relation to the age of the pregnancy and a very slow heart rate in the foetus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"krwawienie-z-drog-rodnych-w-ciazy-%e2%80%93-co-robic\">Genital tract bleeding in pregnancy - what to do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all genital bleeding ends in miscarriage, but the occurrence of this symptom should prompt the pregnant woman to consult an obstetrician-gynaecologist as soon as possible (in the ED or on-call gynaecology department at the hospital, especially if the bleeding is heavy).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"poronienie-%e2%80%93-interwencja-lekarska\">Miscarriage - medical intervention<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In some patients, it is possible to stop a miscarriage by promptly instituting pharmacological treatment, but in most cases the use of pregnancy support measures has no effect, as miscarriage is de facto a natural mechanism available to the mother's body to eliminate an embryo that is not developing properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medical assistance for miscarriage also includes performing a curettage of the uterine cavity if the organ has not completely cleared following the loss of the pregnancy, and in cases of persistent heavy bleeding from the genital tract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"przyczyny-poronienia\">Causes of miscarriage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"check-list\">\n\t    <header class=\"check-list__header\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Miscarriages in the first trimester of pregnancy are most commonly <a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/research\/genetic\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"269431\">due to genetic factors (genetic disorders in the foetus)<\/a>, abnormalities in the structure of the uterus and abnormalities in the formation of the foetal egg and surrounding tissues (trophoblast).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the later stages of pregnancy, miscarriage is sometimes the result:<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/header>\n    <ul class=\"mb-0 p-0 check-list__inner\">\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n                <p><a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/przyczyny-nieplodnosci-zaburzenia-owulacji\/\">hormonal disorders<\/a> (insufficient progesterone production by the placenta or corpus luteum);<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n                <p>systemic diseases in the pregnant woman (<a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/blog\/how-hypothyroidism-affects-the-development-of-pregnancy\/\">hypothyroidism<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/blog\/whether-lifestyle-affects-fertility\/\">uncompensated diabetes<\/a>);<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n (spontaneous cervical dilation).<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n        <\/ul>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"poronienia-a-wiek-kobiety-i-mezczyzny\">Miscarriages and the age of women and men<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An important factor influencing the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/blog\/miscarriages-symptoms-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\" type=\"blog\" id=\"1999\">miscarriages<\/a> is the age, both of the woman and her partner.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"columns-slider block_21c6d0ac52f86e9725709e4461a89eb1\">\n        \t    <div a 20-year-old woman is on average 12-15%, while in a 40-year-old woman it increases to over 50%. Above all, it is necessary to rule out the role of systemic diseases and to assess whether the pregnant woman's lifestyle had an impact on the miscarriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there have been more miscarriages, it is worth implementing a full diagnostic workup, with a view to:<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/header>\n    <ul class=\"mb-0 p-0 check-list__inner\">\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n                <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/research\/genetic\/\">exclusion of genetic disorders<\/a> (survey <a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/research\/karyotype\/\">karyotypes<\/a> in both partners);<\/p>\n<\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n                <p>detect possible anatomical abnormalities in the structure of the uterine cavity (<a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/research\/hysteroscopy\/\">hysteroscopy<\/a>);<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n                <p>exclusion of blood coagulation disorders, especially hypercoagulability (e.g. antiphospholipid syndrome);<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n                <p>determine whether the miscarriages may have been related to the existence of infectious agents (e.g. chlamydial infection);<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n            <li class=\"d-flex check-list__item\">\n            <div class=\"svg-container\">\n                <svg width=\"16\" height=\"16\">\n                    <use xlink:href=\"#icon-check-2\" \/>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"check-list__item__rte\">\n                <p>evaluation of the endocrine profile and exclusion of the role of disorders <a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/doctors\/endocrinologist-2\/\">endocrinology<\/a> in pregnancy loss.<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n        <\/ul>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the history taken, diagnosed disorders and past medical history, the doctor may also order other tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"poronienia-nawykowe\">Habitual miscarriages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Full diagnostics are essential in the case of a miscarriage of the third consecutive pregnancy (known as a 'third pregnancy'). <a href=\"https:\/\/invimed.pl\/en\/blog\/miscarriages-symptoms-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\" type=\"blog\" id=\"1999\">habitual miscarriages<\/a>), as each subsequent pregnancy will automatically be treated as a high-risk pregnancy, requiring surveillance and treatment (if the cause of the miscarriages can be established in time, there is a chance of causal treatment).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is advisable to have diagnostic tests carried out at an infertility clinic, as such centres provide access to full diagnostics and rapidly implemented treatment -
