Fertility tests
Fertility tests are the first step towards fulfilling the dream of having a child. When efforts to have a child take a long time and are unsuccessful, it is worth looking for the cause of this condition, because a correct diagnosis is the first step towards effective treatment.
When to perform fertility tests?
Fertility tests should benefit not only the woman, but also her partner, as infertility is a common problem of the couple and a reduction in reproductive capacity affects both sexes to the same extent (moreover, it happens that a decrease in fertility occurs simultaneously in both partners).
It is understood that a consultation with a doctor involved in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility is best:
-
no later than after one year of unsuccessful efforts to have a child if the woman is under 30 years of age;
-
after six months if the woman is 30-39 years old;
-
as soon as possible if the woman is over 39;
-
as soon as possible if it is the man who is over 40 years of age (the age of the partner is then of little relevance).
First visit to an infertility clinic
During the first visit to the clinic, the doctor takes a detailed medical history of both partners. He then performs a gynaecological examination and a vaginal ultrasound on the woman and orders laboratory tests from a blood sample (often AMH, FSH, TSH, FT3, FT4, oestradiol, prolactin) and a semen test on the patient's partner (testing the partner's fertility is an integral part of the couple's infertility diagnosis). Some tests need to be carried out on a specific day of the menstrual cycle.

If the doctor suspects that the reason for the difficulty in getting pregnant is a disease or structural defect within the reproductive system, the woman will have additional tests. In the case of a man, we also recommend andrological consultationas a result of which additional tests may also be ordered by the partner.
The medical information presented should be considered as general guidelines and does not replace the individual judgement of the doctor regarding the medical management of each patient. The doctor, after a thorough examination of the patient's condition, determines the extent and frequency of diagnostic tests and/or therapeutic procedures, taking into account specific medical indications. All medical decisions are made in full consultation with the patient.
