Frequently asked questions - FAQ
The costs of fertility tests vary depending on the extent of the diagnosis. Some of the basic tests can be reimbursed by the National Health Service following a referral from a gynaecologist.
Most fertility tests in women, such as ultrasound or hormone tests, are painless. Some procedures like HSG may cause discomfort similar to menstrual pain. In men, basic semen tests are completely painless.
A complete fertility diagnosis for a couple usually takes 2-3 months, as some tests need to be performed on specific days of the cycle. The results of some genetic tests may be available even 4-6 weeks after the collection of the material.
Hormonal contraception can affect the results of hormonal tests, so it is recommended to discontinue it 2-3 months before diagnosis. Some imaging tests like ultrasound can be performed without discontinuing contraception. The decision to discontinue is always made by the doctor on an individual basis.
The medical information presented should be considered as general guidelines and does not replace the individual judgement of the doctor regarding the medical management of each patient. The doctor, after a thorough examination of the patient's condition, determines the extent and frequency of diagnostic tests and/or therapeutic procedures, taking into account specific medical indications. All medical decisions are made in full consultation with the patient.
