Diagnosis of female infertility
Infertility tests are specialised diagnostic tests that help doctors detect the causes of pregnancy problems. They include hormonal assessment, imaging tests of the reproductive organs and tests to detect infections. Key tests include AMH to assess ovarian reserve, FSH to check the functioning of the reproductive system, SONO HSG to test the patency of the fallopian tubes and hysteroscopy to assess the uterine cavity. Cytology, a thyroid profile and tests for infectious diseases are also performed. All tests are individually selected by the doctor after a detailed medical history. Find out the details of the individual tests and how to diagnose infertility effectively.
Highlights
- Infertility tests are individually selected by the doctor on the basis of the medical history in order to quickly detect the cause and select an effective treatment.
- AMH testing assesses a woman's ovarian reserve and fertility, while FSH checks the normal functioning of the reproductive system.
- SONO HSG examines the patency of the fallopian tubes and the structure of the uterus using ultrasound and a special foam, while hysteroscopy removes adhesions and polyps.
- Before any procedure, tests for viruses and infectious diseases are required, as well as a thyroid profile to exclude diseases that prevent pregnancy.
AMH test (evaluation of ovarian reserve)
The AMH hormone test, or ovarian reserve test, allows a woman's fertility to be assessed.
FSH
The FSH hormone is responsible for the normal function of the reproductive system in women. It also helps in the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome.
SONO HSG
It is an examination that checks for irregularities in the structure of the uterus and the patency of the fallopian tubes. With the help of an ultrasound scanner (USG), the flow of a special fluid (foam) in the woman's reproductive organs is observed.
Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is an examination that allows the structure of the uterine cavity to be assessed and adhesions, polyps and myomas to be removed.
Cytology
Cytology is an essential test for diagnosing cancer and pre-cancerous conditions of the cervix.
LBC liquid cytology
Liquid cytology is a modern and more accurate cytological examination for the diagnosis of cancer. The differences for the patient are not perceptible in any way.
Thyroid profile
TSH, FT4, FT3 are performed to exclude thyroid diseases that prevent pregnancy. The determination of hormone levels is performed from a blood sample.
Testing for viruses and infectious diseases
Patients must be tested for viruses and infectious diseases prior to any treatment at our clinic.
Frequently asked questions - FAQ
Most endocrine tests have results ready in 1-3 working days. Imaging tests such as SONO HSG or hysteroscopy give an immediate assessment. The longest wait is for virology results - 3 to 7 days.
Blood tests are painless, cytology causes only slight discomfort. SONO HSG may cause a feeling of pressure and hysteroscopy requires local anaesthesia. Most patients tolerate all diagnostic procedures well.
FSH and AMH can be tested on any day of the cycle, but FSH is best on day 2-5. Some hormones require a specific phase of the cycle for correct interpretation. Your doctor will always determine the optimal date for testing.
Yes, infertility diagnosis always involves both partners. The male performs a semenogram and hormonal and virological tests. Infertility in approximately 40% cases is due to male factors.
The medical information presented should be considered as general guidelines and does not replace the individual judgement of the doctor regarding the medical management of each patient. The doctor, after a thorough examination of the patient's condition, determines the extent and frequency of diagnostic tests and/or therapeutic procedures, taking into account specific medical indications. All medical decisions are made in full consultation with the patient.
