Insemination - who is recommended and who is not? .
We continue to encourage couples to participate in a clinical trial of a drug that improves the effectiveness of insemination. The study is conducted in Invimed clinics in Warsaw and Poznan. We talk about what insemination is, to whom it is recommended and why it is worth taking part in the study with an experienced gynaecologist and at the same time medical director of Invimed Warsaw - Tomasz Rokicki, MD.
What is insemination?
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is one of the methods used to treat infertility. It is primarily a safe and painless procedure that involves the insertion of a semen sample into the uterus, which has previously been selected and properly prepared under laboratory conditions. The semen is administered through a thin silicone catheter.
To whom the treatment is recommended insemination?
The procedure of intrauterine insemination can be used by couples who, despite good results of fertility tests and long efforts for pregnancy, remain childless, the patient's semen is slightly abnormal or he experiences ejaculatory disorders. Insemination is also recommended for couples diagnosed with idiopathic infertility, i.e. infertility for which, with the current state of knowledge, we cannot find the cause.
When it is not recommended insemination?
Insemination does not make sense when both fallopian tubes are obstructed and when the patient's sperm is very weak, e.g. when there are less than one million sperm in a millilitre. Does IVF precede insemination procedures? Not always. A couple is qualified for in vitro fertilisation after 12 months of treatment with other methods, including insemination. On the other hand, the doctor may decide to qualify earlier if the use of other methods does not promise a pregnancy. This is the case, for example, in the case of obstruction of both fallopian tubes, inability to induce ovulation or severe endometriosis, as well as in the case of low-quality sperm. In such cases, insemination will not be successful, so it need not precede IVF treatment.
How many times is the insemination procedure used before moving on to IVF? With insemination, pregnancy should occur in the first 4-6 cycles. Lack of success is an indication for IVF.
How effective is the treatment insemination?
Depending on the age of the patient, the quality of the semen used for insemination and the number of mature follicles after hormonal stimulation, the success rate of treatment with intrauterine insemination ranges from 10 to 25% per cycle. However - like almost every treatment, insemination is also evolving with the development of medicine and technology. For example, clinical trials currently underway at Invimed on a new drug that aims to improve the effectiveness of insemination. And here it is worth noting that we still have vacancies for couples who would like to take part in this study.
Why take part in the survey?
Any couple with a medical indication for insemination can benefit from taking part in the trial. First and foremost, couples who qualify to participate in the clinical trial will undergo the tests needed for insemination completely free of charge, benefit from the new drug and free insemination. And this is already a lot. In addition, if the drug - as predicted - increases the effectiveness of insemination, it will also increase their chances of becoming parents.

The medical information presented should be considered as general guidelines and does not replace the individual judgement of the doctor regarding the medical management of each patient. The doctor, after a thorough examination of the patient's condition, determines the extent and frequency of diagnostic tests and/or therapeutic procedures, taking into account specific medical indications. All medical decisions are made in full consultation with the patient.
