Pregnancy in a month? It's possible! How quickly can you get pregnant with IVF?.

Basic steps of the in vitro method

The IVF procedure consists of several phases: stimulation for the growth of ovarian follicles, extraction of mature ova from the ovaries, fertilisation with the sperm of the partner or donor, followed by the culture of the resulting embryos and their transfer into the woman's uterus. In total, the whole process takes about a month, but the exact time depends on the individual case.

Preparation

The longest phase of IVF is the woman's hormonal stimulation phase. Its duration depends on the stimulation protocol chosen by the doctor, i.e. the rule by which the patient takes hormonal medication. The most common is the long protocol, during which the woman takes subcutaneous injections for about four weeks. If the treating doctor decides on a so-called short protocol, then the stimulation lasts for a shorter period of about two weeks.

Collection of reproductive cells

Two days after the end of hormonal stimulation, an oocyte retrieval procedure is performed. Ovarian puncture is performed under brief general anaesthesia. It takes about 15 minutes, after which the woman is left for a maximum of two hours of observation. At the same time, the patient's partner donates sperm. The ovarian puncture procedure involves using an ultrasound-guided needle to retrieve each mature ovum from a follicle.

Fertilisation and incubation

The collected ova are fertilised on the same day. The sperm can come from the patient's partner or a donor. The resulting embryos are placed in special incubators for two to five days to reach the appropriate stage. One method for accurately tracking the subsequent stages of embryo development is the special EmbryoVision® monitoring, which increases the chances of pregnancy by 8 to 12 per cent.

Transfer and pregnancy

Embryos are ready to be placed in the woman's uterus on the second, third or fifth day after fertilisation. The timing of the embryo transfer is decided by the attending physician. The transfer is performed under ultrasound guidance using a thin catheter. After the transfer, the patient should lead a quiet lifestyle, limiting her physical activity. After twelve days, the level of the HCG hormone in the blood is checked, which indicates pregnancy. In the fifth week, the woman reports for an ultrasound examination to confirm the pregnancy.

In vitro - what are the chances of a quick pregnancy?

It can be assumed that the duration of the IVF process (taking into account the chosen stimulation protocol and the length of embryo culture) is between three and five weeks. Let us remember, however, that infertility treatment is preceded by diagnostics, the time of which depends on the individual case and the necessity to carry out a specific number of tests. For this reason, you need to be patient, because although in such a situation everyone wants to get pregnant as soon as possible, it is impossible to limit the time required. Many aspects depend not only on the procedure, but also on other factors, i.e. the woman's age, her health, the quality of her partner's sperm, the quality of the ova, concomitant diseases or other causes of infertility.

In the case of IVF, the first time success rate remains at an average of 20%, but with three treatments the chance increases to 40-50%. At the Invimed clinic, as many as 54% in vitro fertilisation cycles, carried out between 2015 and 2017, resulted in pregnancy and the birth of children.
