No sex for 5 days. How does the fertility test work in men?.

What is male fertility testing?

Semen examination forms the basis for the diagnosis of male infertility. It allows assessment of sperm count, quality, shape and activity. During the analysis, general semen parameters such as liquefaction time, volume, viscosity, ejaculate appearance, pH, percentage of live and motile spermatozoa, number of spermatozoa per ml of semen, total number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate and the degree of agglutination of their clustering are described.

Abnormalities in one of the above parameters may be the cause of male infertility. Semen examination can also detect inflammatory conditions of the reproductive organs, as evidenced by the presence of leukocytes, or autoimmune disorders. The semen examination is therefore the basis for making a diagnosis and implementing appropriate treatment.

What does the semen test and sample donation look like?

The semen donation itself is very easy. The material for the test is obtained by masturbation. However, it is first necessary to prepare properly for it. Before the test, a period of sexual abstinence of 3-5 days (exactly that - no shorter and no longer) is necessary. This means that the man must refrain from ejaculation for exactly this length of time. No alcohol should be drunk for 3 to 5 days. For stimulants, it is advisable to opt for a longer break, even 10 days.

Longer or shorter periods of abstinence may result in lower sperm counts or reduced sperm motility. Samples taken after two days of abstinence will usually contain the highest number of motile sperm compared to samples taken after shorter or longer periods of abstinence.

The patient receives the test result after 3-4 working days. In order for the doctor to interpret the test result correctly, he/she must be aware of any past illnesses and medication taken in the 3 months prior to the test. Medications and supplements taken must be brought to the attention of the doctor before the test, as some of them may interfere with the result.
