Insertion of the classic contraceptive coil

It is estimated that more than 160 million women worldwide use IUDs. Contraceptive coils are safe, long-lasting and effective. In Invimed Gdynia, we offer patients the selection of an appropriate method, and if it turns out to be a classic contraceptive coil, we offer the procedure of its insertion.

The IUD is a method of reversible long-term contraception that has the highest rate of uninterrupted use. Once deposited, it can be worn from 5 to as long as 10 years. A study by the World Health Organisation found that almost 30% women using an IUD wear it for 8 years.

The classic contraceptive coil

The effect of the classic IUD is mainly that it reduces the number and viability of sperm and prevents the egg from implanting in the endometrium. This is a so-called non-hormonal coil (e.g. with a copper or silver coating). There are more than a dozen types. They differ mainly in their construction and material of manufacture.

Choice of spiral

Which coil is best for you should be decided by your gynaecologist based on your history, gynaecological examination and any additional tests that may be necessary in your case.

The effectiveness of the contraceptive coil is very high. The Pearl index for IUDs is 0.2-0.8. This index is calculated from the number of pregnancies per 100 women using a particular contraceptive method for 1 year. With unprotected intercourse of any kind, the Pearl index is as high as 85, and with the contraceptive pill it is about 0.3 per cent.

Contraindications to the insertion of a classic contraceptive coil are:

  • inflammation of the appendages,

  • inflammation of the cervix,

  • genital tract bleeding,

  • cancer of the reproductive organs,

  • very heavy or very painful periods,

  • a history of ectopic pregnancy,

  • planned pregnancy in the near future.

Contraceptive coil insertion procedure

The IUD should be inserted at the end of monthly bleeding - on day 3 or 4 of the cycle. On the day of the procedure, you should take special care of intimate hygiene. Before the procedure, the gynaecologist will carry out a medical interview and a gynaecological examination, during which he will rule out any contraindications to this form of contraception.

The IUD is inserted into the genital tract using a special applicator. In general, the total time for insertion of an IUD is not long - it takes about 15 minutes.

Protection against pregnancy

For the first month after insertion of the contraceptive coil, an additional method of contraception must be used.Â
