What does prenatal testing consist of?
Prenatal tests are performed at various stages of pregnancy. A distinction is made between tests non-invasive and invasive.
Non-invasive studies include:
- ultrasound,
- tests made from the mother's blood.
With these, it is possible to assess the health of the foetus, the stage of development or to determine the sex.
Invasive tests
are most often ordered in the case of a deeper diagnosis when there is an increased risk of a genetic defect in the child. These include:
- amniocentesis,
- chorionic villi biopsy,
- cordocentesis.
