Cytology is an essential test for diagnosing cancer and pre-cancerous conditions of the cervix.
What is a cytological examination?
A cytological examination is performed as part of cancer prevention. Cytology involves inserting a special smear brush into the vaginal part of the cervix and taking swabs, which are then examined under a microscope.
The smear analysis allows the detection of epithelial cell changes - some of which are harmless, but sometimes the examination reveals the presence of cancer cells. Then, with early diagnosis, the patient has a better chance of receiving effective treatment and recovering.
| Approximately 1.5% to 2% cytological smears present abnormalities requiring further diagnostic procedures. |
When to have a cytology?
It is recommended that the cytology test be carried out in the first phase of the cycle, at least two days after the end of menstruation, but no later than 14 days before the next bleeding period. Optimally, cytology is taken around day 10 of the cycle. During the two days preceding the cervical smear, there should be no intercourse or use of vaginal preparations, lubes or spermicides.
